It’s clearly been a gaming sort of month in Hope&Glory because this is the second of our offerings from the world of video game-based entertainment.
The announcement trailer for a little-known game, Grand Theft Auto VI, was released at the start of December. You might have heard of it. Maybe.
After setting the internet alight, pulling in over 100M views in near-record time – and causing all kinds of colourful characters to come out of the woodwork and attempt to sue Rockstar Games – it was only a matter of time before someone recreated the trailer.
Step forward the Hyundai Motorsport team.
WRC champion Ott Tanak and his teammate Thierry Neuville took the leading roles in this hilarious, near shot-for-shot recreation of the original (minus wild alligators and twerking on a car roof as it drove down a motorway). They even kept the original dialogue and now-iconic choice of Tom Petty’s “Love Is A Long Road” for the soundtrack.
Launching ahead of the 2024 WRC season kicking off at the end of January, this spoof video proved to be a clever way to garner some attention for the Hyundai Motorsport team – generating coverage across the media spectrum, but importantly, in press titles, like gaming outlets – who would ordinarily never cover rally racing.
Couple that with the fact it brought a massive smile to our faces, then that’s a win all around.
