The game was afoot for a Sherlock Holmes adventure as we helped The Royal Mint launch a new Sir Arthur Conan Doyle coin

This week the Royal Mint team has been busy launching a 50 pence coin commemorating the 160 years since the birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with a coin dedicated to his most famous creation – the great detective himself, Sherlock Holmes.

The sleuth’s profile, complete with his signature pipe and deerstalker, appears on the 50p piece surrounded by the titles of his most popular adventures. The designer of the coin – Stephen Raw – chose to create a design that requires a magnifying glass to read the names of these famous cases, hoping to bring out the “inner detective” of anyone who finds the coin in their change. Something that the TRM team (no strangers to innovative coin design) found very exciting.

Following some stunning media relations, the team secured an impressive 265 pieces of coverage for the story, the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Record, This is Money and The Sun as well as 12 national print pieces in Daily Express, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Record, The Daily Telegraph, Daily Star, Metro (London), The Scottish Daily Mail, The I, The Sun, The Scottish Sun and The Sun Northern Ireland
