Do you get paid more if you’re straight? During LGBT Pride Month, we thought we ought to find out on behalf of LinkedIn and the results were pretty shocking …

During Pride month, LinkedIn saw a spike in discussions around being openly gay at work, with more than twice as many posts on the platform.

Seeing such rich conversation about everything from career progression to inclusion policies and pay inspired us to carry out some research into attitudes in the workplace.

Working alongside leading LGBTQ+ organisation UK Black Pride, we commissioned YouGov to poll 4,000 UK workers who identified as being straight, gay, bisexual or other.

The results not only revealed a host of attitudinal differences, but shocking figures suggesting that the income of LGBT+ professionals in the UK is 16%, or £6,703, less on average than their straight counterparts.

The findings also uncovered that over a quarter of LGBT+ workers surveyed are not out at work, with 28% of those citing fear of judgement by their colleagues as a key reason and 14% actually feeling that their chances of promotion in their company would be hindered if they were to come out.

Media found our stats compelling, resulting in an incredible array of coverage to date, including a TV segment on Sky News Sunrise, features in the Metro, Daily Mail, The IndependentEvening Standard, ReutersHuffington PostThis Is Money, CosmopolitanBustleRefinery29, as well as a raft of trade, specialist and radio hits – with more to come!
