Gucci has decided that the modern luxury consumer is not bothered by browsing but is bored enough to play detective, transforming e-commerce into the host of La Famiglia: Mystery Unfolds, an interactive digital detective story in which guests at La Contessaโs villa are suspected of stealing her missing jewels.
Reminiscent of Broken Sword PC games of the early noughties, its retro aesthetic is the backdrop to a story-driven experience in which retail becomes a digital villa party, built to promote the La Famiglia collection, the first big statement from Demnaโs Gucci.
This fits into a broader trend where retail is becoming more interactive. McDonaldโs uses Monopoly to gamify purchases. Starbucks does something similar with its Starbucks for Life program. DFS has also turned browsing into a game with its Collage Quest.
The result is a playful whodunnit that uses classic mystery tropes. The story begins with a call from La Contessa, who says her jewels are missing. Players take on the role of detectives and question a cast of high-society characters inspired by Agatha Christie, but with a Milanese twist.
The cast includes exaggerated archetypes from the Gucci family universe, such as The Sciura and The Narcisista, drawn from the broader La Famiglia world.
Celebrating and very much leaning into the Jared Leto end of House of Gucci, the game doubles down on โGuccinessโ through Italian caricature and house codes, all while quietly steering you towards a checkout button, of course. The collection itself is explicitly framed by Gucci as the beginning of a new era for the house.
This is not just a basic flash game. It is a polished, branded experience that combines storytelling with shopping.
This is the latest in a series of digital experiments from Gucci, including NFT projects with Christieโs and activations on Roblox. Demna became Artistic Director in March 2025, starting in July. The launch is part of the brandโs effort to define his vision for Gucci.
The collection shows clear signs of Demnaโs time at Balenciaga. There are ballooned sleeves, sculptural collars, and a sense of irony. The luxury handbag becomes a side quest in the story.
By using a game format, Gucci brings its characters to life and turns shopping into a more interactive experience. This approach fills the gap left by the decline of physical stores. It is a deliberate move to keep people engaged online, replacing the sales assistant with a chatbot dressed in high fashion.
