When Balenciaga’s latest towel skirt went on sale, we couldn’t help but think it would be much more cost-efficient for fashionistas to create the look using one of IKEA’s own VINARN towels, which retail for anywhere between £10 and £16 dependent on the size you want.
A mere snip compared to the £695 Balenciaga offering.
A quick photoshoot later – where we recreated the look like-for-like and even had some fun adding our FRAKTA bag which Balenciaga notoriously copied back in 2017 – we took the images to IKEA’s social channels with a tongue-in-cheek post.
Within 24 hours of the Balenciaga skirt going on sale, we were getting just as much coverage and social chatter as the initial piece … if not more. A perfect example of speed plus brilliant execution paying off dividends.
It’s fair to say we may have gone a little viral.
Some of the biggest fashion accounts have posted our version including Hypebeast and Complex and TikTokers such as I Deserve Couture and Lyas couldn’t resist sharing their reactions to our post.
It’s been sweeping editorial media too from nationals including The Telegraph, Indy100 to fashion trendsetters Hunger Magazine, HYPEBEAST and even international fashion media including GQ (IT), ELLE Serbia , Mirror US, Marie Claire UA, Vogue Thailand
It looks like the hype is going to continue for a few days yet, we can’t wait to see where it goes next.
