At Hope&Glory, we believe that the best creative work happens when we step outside our usual circles and listen to voices that challenge our perspectives. Thatโs exactly why we created the โBeyond Your Bubbleโ Speaker Series- to bring in inspiring individuals who can help us navigate topics like social mobility, diversity, and systemic change.
As part of the series, we welcomed Michael Mitchell and Dotun Ogunbayo, the founders of Beyond Your Hood, through our doors.
Beyond Your Hood is a purpose-driven social enterprise dedicated to empowering young people from diverse backgrounds. Michael and Dotun are on a mission to help disadvantaged talent overcome social, emotional, and mental barriers, encouraging them to think – and reach – far beyond their immediate circumstances.
Both Michael and Dotun grew up in Waltham Forest, East London. Theyโve seen first-hand the challenges of systemic barriers, from the impact of crime and trauma to a lack of visible role models. Rather than letting these realities define them, they used their experiences to fuel a movement. Today, they bridge the gap between underserved communities and leadership positions in the professional landscape through mentorship, talks, and their podcast.
During their session, Michael and Dotun explored the power of diverse perspectives, specifically focusing on the unique insights that Gen Z and diverse talent bring to the creative and corporate worlds.
Their talk wasn’t just about representation; it was about the value of lived experience. They highlighted how young people who have navigated complex social realities possess a level of resilience and “outside-the-box” thinking that is invaluable to the professional world.
For us, hosting Beyond Your Hood was a reminder that curiosity is a superpower. By listening to Michael and Dotunโs journey, our team was challenged to think about how we can better support underrepresented talent and ensure that “influence” isn’t restricted by a person’s postcode.
