Work-life balance, literally: Severance cast confined to Perspex cube in Grand Central station

Apple TV pulled off a truly impactful and attention-grabbing stunt to promote the second season of their critically acclaimed office thriller, Severance.

Taking the show’s themes of confinement and the blurring of work-life boundaries to a literal extreme, they placed the core cast inside a transparent, perspex cube in the middle of New York City’s bustling Grand Central Station. Passersby were treated to the surreal sight of Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, and Tramell Tillman, all crammed into this confined space, interacting and performing for the crowds.

It’s fascinating to speculate how this was presented to the cast. Perhaps the producers emphasized the stunt’s alignment with the show’s themes of isolation, control, and the compartmentalization of self. Or maybe Ben Stiller just wrote it into the small print of their contracts.

The stunt mirrors the unsettling atmosphere of Severance, where employees’ memories are surgically divided, separating their work selves from their personal lives.

The sight of the actors confined in the box, performing for an audience, blurred the lines between reality and fiction, mirroring the show’s exploration of identity and free will.

Unfortunately, fans were left wondering if what happened in the box was show canon.
