Doom Reframed gamifies a gallery and turns hardboiled pixelated gaming into high culture browsing

For anyone old enough to remember the iconic PC-based gaming experience that was DOOM, it was an overwhelmingly enjoyable bloodbath of demons and shotguns that left many a gamer playing deep into the night on a diet of Nik Naks and Blue Slush Puppies.

The masterpiece of its pixelated and ever so slightly rubbish aesthetic has officially become retro and sparked some good old-fashioned hacking by indie developers Filippo Meozzi and Liam Stone, who dropped “Doom: The Gallery Experience”: a parody recreation of the gameplaying experience that swaps sulfur swallowing ultraviolence for fine art.

Players can take on the mantle of “Doomguy”, wearing glasses and holding a lovely large glass of wine as they browse masterpieces instead of blasting baddies.

The classic starter level is now a super swanky gallery space that features everything from a high falutin’ gift shop and a “cheese meter” fueled by hors d’oeuvres.

But going beyond the funny reskinning of players and level, each artwork links to the Met Museum’s website, where players can genuinely learn about the art on show.

Captivating hype media and doing the rounds on social, this is the comeback that nobody asked for or expected but is incredibly happy about now it’s here. And best of all, you can dive into your very own, choose your own art-based adventure completely free here.
